Wizards of Waverly Place is a Disney Channel original fantasy television sitcom which premiered on October 12, 2007. It won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2009 for "outstanding children's program" and was nominated for another in 2010.[1] The series was created by Todd J. Greenwald, and stars Selena Gomez, David Henrie and Jake T. Austin as three wizard siblings with magical abilities. Further main cast includes Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals Barrera and David DeLuise.[2]
The series began filming its third season on July 7, 2009. It began airing in High Definition with the third season's premiere episode, "Franken Girl", on October 9, 2009, making this the second of three Disney Channel Shows to transition from Standard Definition to High Definition.[3] The series wrapped up filming its third season on March 26, 2010.[4] On June 3, 2010 Disney Channel announced that they had renewed Wizards of Waverly Place for a fourth season, which started production on August 2, 2010, according to Jake T. Austin's Twitter account. [5]. Season 4 is set to debut in fall 2010 or possibly early 2011. It was also announced that a second film based on the series has been greenlit.[6][7]
Selena Gomez confirmed in a recent MTV interview that the fourth season of Wizards of Waverly Place will be its last and production will end following the second Wizards film, which has yet to be named.
Premise
Set on Waverly Place in Manhattan, New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood, Wizards of Waverly Place centers on the Italian-Mexican Russo family, which includes Alex (Selena Gomez), her older brother Justin (David Henrie) and their younger brother Max (Jake T. Austin). The three Russo siblings are wizards in training and live with their Italian-American father Jerry (David DeLuise), a former wizard, and their Mexican-American mother, Theresa (Maria Canals Barrera) who is a mortal. Alex's best friend Harper (Jennifer Stone) also found out about the Russos' wizard powers in Season 2 in the episode "Harper Knows". The siblings have to keep their secret safe while living in the mortal world. When they become adults, the three siblings will have a wizard competition to decide who will become the family wizard of their generation and keep their powers forever while the other will lose theirs and become mortal. The magical world tends to be very eccentric and surreal.
Production
The series was created and as executive produced by Todd J. Greenwald, who began developing the show after working as a writer and consulting producer during the first season of Hannah Montana. The show is produced by It's a Laugh Productions and Disney Channel Original Productions. The theme song, "Everything Is Not What It Seems", written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, is of techno-pop style and is performed by Selena Gomez. The series is filmed at Hollywood Center Studios in Hollywood, California. Selena Gomez confirmed in an interview that season 4 of Wizards of Waverly Place will be the last season.
Cast
* Selena Gomez as Alex Russo - The middle child also known as rebel Russo. She often gets in trouble by misusing magic and is frequently the first suspect when anything magical goes wrong with the family. She does poorly in regular school and the wizard training, although this is because of lack of effort, not the lack of ability. Her street smarts, tricks, ability to quickly create lies, however, are always right on target, as she is often smooth talking her way out of things everyone suspects of her. Despite how little she tries, she won the wizard competition against her brother Justin in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.
* David Henrie as Justin Russo - The oldest and smartest child of the family. He always focuses on his schoolwork as well as his magical studies and is more advanced as a wizard than any of his siblings. Justin is very confident in winning the wizard competition But unlike his sister Alex, he does not have very much common sense or deceptive abilities (he once accidentally reported his girlfriend and her family to the monster hunter council). As of season 3, he has finished his wizard studies and is now taking a monster hunting course as part of his independent studies. He believes he is destined to become his family's full wizard due to his advanced magical abilities and advances in wizard studies. However, Justin loses his powers to Alex during the wizard competition during the Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.
* Jake T. Austin as Max Russo - The youngest child in the family. While Justin is book smart, and Alex is street smart, Max doesn't excel in either category. He often spends his time doing very odd things (by both wizard and mortal standards), such as walking dogs to buy "cups on a chain" with his mortal friend. Like Alex, he often uses magic incorrectly but not as serious or as troublesome and is not doing well in school or his wizard studies. He is not smart, although it is mentioned in the episode "Wizard for Day" when Alex gets the Merlin's Hat as a birthday present for Jerry so he could be a wizard again for a day that he has a C- in math, to which Alex replies, "Wait, a C-? How are you doing better than me?". He had a magical tutor, with whom he excelled in learning past wizard lessons he failed with, named Tutor Hatchback in "My Tutor, Tutor". In Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, he did not compete with Alex and Justin in the wizard competition because by that time he was erased from the world due to Alex's wish.
* David DeLuise as Jerry Russo - Father of Justin, Max, and Alex and also their wizard teacher. Justin, Max and Alex believe that he lost his wizard competition with his siblings, but he actually won and gifted his abilities to his brother, Kelbo (Jeff Garlin) as revealed in Season 1 Episode 16 "Alex in the Middle".
* Maria Canals Barrera as Theresa Russo Mother of Alex, Justin and Max Russo and co-owner of the Waverly Sub Station, with her husband Jerry; and is also the slightly more serious one out the couple. Theresa is Mexican American.
* Jennifer Stone as Harper Finkle - Alex's best friend. She learns about magic in the episode "Harper Knows" when Alex unwillingly attends a festival in order to help out the Wizard Council and upsets Harper. She is terrified of Alex's use of magic. When she is under pressure or when Alex has done something wrong and she knows about it, Harper will give an excuse to leave, such as "See you in PE!", then flee the room. Her last name was "Evans" in season one and in the novelizations.
